The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1957) is an adaptation of the play The Barretts of Wimpole Street by Rudolf Besier, directed by Sidney Franklin, and a remake of 1934 film, also directed by Franklin.
According to Wikipedia and IMDB, the script credited to John Dighton was actually the same than in 1934 film, written by Besier, Ernest Vajda and Donald Ogden Stewart.
The film is set in the mid-19th century London and tells the romance of poets Elizabeth Browning nee Barrett (Jennifer Jones) and Robert Browning (Bill Travers). Robert falls for Elizabeth and wants to marry her, despite the protests of her father (John Gielgud).
The film looks lovely, it´s sets and costumes are wonderful in lush color, and although there is very little "action" the film is never dull. However, I disliked the hints that overprotective father Edward Moulton-Barrett was incestuous. There is not any evidence of sexual abuse, except dirty imagination.
